THE PLASTIC INJECTION & MOLDED PLASTIC PROCESS
Intricate plastic components are quickly and economically made by pouring or injecting liquid plastic into molds, which are norally made of steel. There are two types of plastics. One type is "Thermoplastics" which can be melted into a fluid. Thermoplastics can be re-melted and therefore re-cycled. A second type is "Thermoset Plastics" which have a one-way chemical reaction. Thermoset plastics are normally filled with reinforcing materials, such as glass or carbon fibers. Thermoset plastics usually are more dimensionally stable and heat resistant than thermoplastics.
The plastic material is either poured or injected into molds, made in at least two parts which are clamped together during the pour. The material is held in the mold until it cures. The process is very similiar to a Die Casting.
